Off-Grid Solar Inverter

There are three main configurations for solar systems.

  1. Off grid (completely separate from the power grid)
  2. Grid Tied (bi-directional grid tied)
  3. Hybrid (Power your main panel with your choice of sources.)

The EG4 6000XP Inverter is an off-grid system so it cannot directly power your main grid-based panel. These inverters can be used to create a powerful portable “solar generator” or they can be set up to power your entire house. The 6000XP provides up to 3,000 watts per leg (120V x 2) so a single unit is not enough to run a house. However, you can parallel two or more units to meet your power requirements.

To power your house with an off-grid inverter, you must install a “critical loads” panel that is separate from your main grid panel. This is a common practice for people with generator connections to their house.

The inverter(s) is configured to prioritize the power sources and feed your critical loads panel in this order.

  1. Solar panels are set up and connected to the inverter.
  2. You’ll want to install batteries if you want to store your extra solar power for later use.
  3. A double-pole breaker is installed in your grid panel to provide a grid power source for your inverter. If the solar and battery power are not available, the inverter will automatically use grid power from your main panel.
  4. You can also add a generator input for this inverter for a redundant backup in case grid power isn’t available.
